Skin Concerns
Acne / Acne Scarring
Acne is a common skin condition typically affecting teenagers and young adults. Acne is usually caused by an increase in androgens, which occurs during puberty.
Actinic Keratosis (AK)
Also called ‘Solar Keratosis’ is a premalignant condition has the appearance of thick, scaly, or crusty patches of skin.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
A BCC is the most common type of skin cancer. It rarely kills, however, because it can cause significant disfigurement by invading surrounding tissues, it is still considered malignant.
Chloasma (Pregnancy Mask / Melasma)
This is a common skin disorder among females with darker skin types living in sunny climates. Characterised by symmetrical darker patches of pigmentation on the face.
Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN)
Is a skin condition common in dark skins, characterized by many harmless small dark ‘mole’ or ‘wart’- like growths on the face, neck, chest and back.
Folliculitis (Ingrown Hair)
This is where hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin. The ingrown hair condition is seen primarily in curly hair. It may or may not be accompanied by an infection of the hair follicle (“razor bumps”),
Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation: Hyperpigmentation affects women and men of all ethnic groups, and features areas of darkened skin. Although, it is most common in middle-aged and beyond.
Hypo-pigmentation
is the loss of skin color. It is caused by melanocyte or melanin depletion, or a decrease in the amino acid tyrosine, which is used by melanocytes to make melanin.
Keloids (Hypertrophic Scars)
A Keloid scar is an abnormal scar in the form of firm rubbery lesions or shiny fibrous nodules, often red, pink or purple in appearance, and can vary from pink to flesh-coloured or red to dark brown in colour.
Localised Scleroderma
The disease involves isolated patches of hardened skin. Systemic sclerosis affects the skin but may also involve the body’s internal organs.
Melasma (Hormonal Pigmentation)
Melasma is dark patches or skin discolourations and is especially common with pregnant women and those who are taking oral or patch contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medications.
Moles / Nevi
A benign tumor, which varies in colour from mid-brown to black and can be raised or flat and all different sizes. Most don’t require treatment, just monitoring.
Onychomycosis (Toenail Fungus)
A fungal infection found underneath the surface of the nail, which can also penetrate the nail. These can be painful and cause difficulty when walking or running.
Pityriasis Rosea
Pityriasis Rosea is a self limiting inflammatory rash of the skin which appears as a scaly patch on the skin which may be pink or dark in colour.
Poikiloderma of Civatte / Red Neck
This type of pigmentation appears as reddish-brown discolouration with prominent hair follicles and dilation of fine blood vessels, typically found on the sides of the neck.
Seborrhoeic Wart / Keratosis
A small benign skin growth primarily brown or black – appears as a greasy or crusty flat or slightly raised spot on the skin.
Solar Keratosis
Also called ‘Actinic Keratosis (AK)’ – this is a premalignant condition of thick, scaly, or crusty patches of skin. It is more common in fair-skinned people and is also associated with those who are frequently exposed to the sun.
Venous Lake
A Venous Lake is a soft, compressible, dark blue to purple, spot or papule commonly found on sun-exposed surfaces of the lip, face and ears.
